David Garrick (1717–1779) was a pioneering English actor, playwright, and theatre manager who transformed 18th-century theatre. Born in Hereford, England, he moved to London with Samuel Johnson in 1737. Garrick's debut as Richard III in 1741 marked the beginning of his rise to fame, thanks to his naturalistic acting style, which was a departure from the exaggerated performances of the time.
In 1747, Garrick became the manager of Drury Lane Theatre, a role he held for nearly 30 years, significantly elevating the status of actors and the theatre profession. He was known for his versatility, excelling in both tragic and comic roles. Garrick retired in 1776 and passed away in 1779, leaving a lasting legacy in the world of theatre.
