Bow C1760
Spoon Tray, Hammett O'Neale landscape
From a Bow service with decoration attributed to the painter Jeffryes Hammett O'Neale, probably in the London workshop of James Giles. The tray with shallow rim and shaped outline with gilt on red border, and painted with a river scene of a castle on a treed island; the foreground with fence and tree, the sky with flocks of birds; all in painted enamels.
Prov: Taylor Collection; Robyn Robb 2002; Sotheby’s London 1962.
It appears that only one Bow service was produced with this decoration, possibly through outside decoration of assembled Bow items in the white. Other pieces, decorated by the same hand, and apparently from the same service, include: (i) Teabowl and saucer, Gardiner Museum, Toronto (G 83.1.0807.1-2), as circa 1755-60. (ii) Coffee cup and saucer, V&A, Bequest Mrs Selwyn Parkinson, C. 7&A-1965, as circa 1755-60, H. 7.0 cm. (iii) Teapot, oval, Spero, 1995/2012, [and Tilley 1957, Plate XXIV, Teapot and Stand].
