Sauceboat
Of small moulded fluted form on raised base, the body with scalloped rim, pointed lip and loop handle with heart shaped terminal. Painted with garden flowers in rose purple, yellow, blue and green with black-brown stems; the interior rim feathered in rose purple, the well with heartsease; the handle and base with stylized flower heads and dashes. Chalky paste. Straw translucency.
Provenance: with the Connoisseurs’ Store, Melbourne, 1963.
Such boats were issued in sizes and similar decoration, probably apparently by different hands: (i) larger, Collection #209; (ii) smaller, V&A, Broderip Gift, C.954-1924, butter boat. A small bowl, Freeman Collection, #144, p.97 has the same decoration.
