Pint mug of small baluster form with spreading base and simple loop handle with heart shaped termination and painted rim in purple-brown. The exterior of the mug transfer printed in deep lilac-purple with Pheasants -- three pheasants, one on the branch of a tree with mountains behind; the reverse with Two Sheep, of sheep beside rocks and trees, and with two subsidiary prints of a heron and a swallow. Finely potted; even white glaze. Straw translucency. Base partially glazed within wiped footrim.

Provenance: with Winifred Williams, UK, 1967; the Geoffrey W. Capell Collection; Mrs W. D. Dickson Collection.

The prints on the mug also occur on a Bow ovoid vase marked on the base with the letter ‘B’ in blue underglaze, Guy-Jones, 2013, #42A and 50B, pp 64-65 and 76-77. The Pheasants from an engraving by Pierce Tempest after Francis Barlow’s Various Birds and Beasts Drawn from Life . The Two Sheep adapted from an engraving from The Compleat Drawing Master, 1766, probably after the Dutch artist Nicolaes Berchem (1620-1683); illustrated Guy-Jones, #50.

The mug exhibited ECC, English Pottery and Porcelain, Catalogue, 1948, #148, Plate 31.
