Adam Smith (1723–1790) was a Scottish economist and philosopher best known for his influential work, The Wealth of Nations (1776), which laid the foundations for modern economics. A professor at the University of Glasgow, Smith promoted ideas of free markets, the division of labor, and the “invisible hand” guiding economic prosperity. His earlier book, The Theory of Moral Sentiments (1759), explored human ethics and sympathy. Smith’s ideas remain central to economic theory and liberal thought.
