Wedgwood C1860
Pair figures, Bacchantes
Perhaps the most complex work in black basalt undertaken on any scale by Wedgwood, the Bacchantes, are adapted from sculptures by Clodion. A large and impressive pair, full of vigour and movement.
Clodion was known for his technical mastery in terracotta sculpture, and his Bacchantes exemplifies his ability to convey sensuality, energy, and emotion in a relatively small and delicate medium. The sculptor's work was well-received during his lifetime, and he gained popularity for his depictions of mythological and allegorical subjects.
Each figure professional repairs. The male's leg has been reattached; the females bells are restoration. The work is well done and invisible to the eye.
