An early (Wedgwood & Bentley) self-framing portrait medaillion of Jules, Cardinal Mazarin in black basalt. Mazarin was assistant, then successor, to Cardinal Richelieu as first minister to Louis XIII and XIV. During this time, he established a number of legal principles which form the basis of modern International Law.

He also invented the slotted insert for serving dishes, to drain vegetables.
