Portland Vase - Black, Full Sized

A full-sized copy of The Portland Vase in solid black jasper.

Production of solid black jasper resumed in the 1860s. but was not perfected until about 1880. This example has a couple of minor losses to the relief, which is typical of black jasper a this time. There is also some staining to the base, also typical of 19th century examples.

However, the condition is excellent, and the translucence and detail in the relief is some of the best I've seen. It's good enough to suggest the shading of the first edition.
