Potpourri Vase by Turner
In pale blue jasper dip, with engine turning and rouletting filled with jasper slip.
The latter aspect refers to the chequered pattern near the top. A pattern was impressed into the clay, which was then filled with black jasper; the result was then smoothed on the lathe. This creates the chequered effect.
Also of interest is the stripes, which are engine turned fluting, filled with blue jasper slip.
Turner was one of the best of Wedgwood’s imitators, and marked examples are very rare.
