Plaque - Frightened Horse
Modelled for Wedgwood in 1780 by George Stubbs (1724-1806). Stubbs is generally considered to have been one of the greatest British painters of animals, and his portraits of horses are particularly well known; and this particular subject has been popular in painting, engraving and in Black Basalt since he first painted it. Examples of this plaque are not often available, and rarely in the original size (16”, or 40cm), as offered here. Marked BB for the decorator, Brian Bates.
Small ding to bottom of frame.
