This figure has for a ling time been paired with #4831, but the two are here offered separately as we do not believe they are a true pair. The catalogue description below refers to both figures.

The figures with human female heads; each wearing a cap framing an elaborately made-up face above a ruff and outsized bead necklace pendant between exposed breasts; their animal bodies accoutered with tasselled, decorated, saddle cloths, each enamelled differently in vibrant muses-style palettes with gilt enrichments over brown. The figures facing and each mounted on a base formed of elaborate rococo scrolls in the manner of contemporary ormolu; the base of one further decorated in colours, the other in the white. White porcelain. L. 4.7 in (12.0 cm).

Provenance: Taylor Collection; Albert Amor, London, 1999; the Raymond Yarbrough Collection; the Rous Lench Collection (paper label); the Heilbron Collection (paper label).

This pair illustrated Tharp, 1997, p.98, fig 83; Apollo, November 1952, cover.
