Tazza, or footed dish, stencilled and hand painted with designs of musicians and dancers based on wall paintings from ancient Pompeii, based on illustrations in Les Ruines de Pompei, by F. Mazois, published 1824-1838. This example is one of a small number produced for the Art Union of London, which was founded in 1836 to support artists without the need to private patronage, and to improve the taste of the middle classes. Members paid an annual subscription of one guinea, and the Union used the funds to commission works of art. Each member received at least an engraving of a new painting each year; but they also had the chance of winning one of the important works each year, such as this piece.
